Praised as "a gem of the fringe festival" when it premiered at The Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival in 2019, FATHER, DAUGHTER AND HOLY GHOST is a funny, loving portrait of a family whose eccentric patriarch won't move out of his house except "feet first." This one-woman show is how Barbara Brady, a writer, performer and communicator by trade, channeled her grief at the loss of her father. It's a tribute that finds the humor in in filial piety and sibling rivalry in a household where the way to Dad's heart is through science! Religion and music figure prominently in the show which also teaches audiences such facts as who invented cruise control and how to properly wind a vacuum cleaner cord!

About the Artist

Barbara Brady is a writer and performer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Father, Daughter and Holy Ghost is her first solo play. She premiered the piece at the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival in August 2019 and has performed excerpts at Solo Sundays at Stagewerx and The Marsh, both in San Francisco. As a singer, she performs a cappella jazz with The Merlot Notes, a 10-woman ensemble based in Silicon Valley. She spent many years as a professional cathedral chorister and soloist in Cincinnati, OH, where she also produced and performed cabaret and performance art, drawing on an even earlier obsession with modern dance.

"Code Gray in the Self-check Lane"
We're marshalling every resource we can to get Dad back to where he was. What we actually did was create a safe space for him to let go. It's really so sad. Instead of ever crying, I get a raging cold, and the rage doesn't stop there.

Excerpt from the full-length piece and is part of Tell It On Tuesday, a curated evening of short works by five artists.

"Dating on the Road to Medicare"
I'm riding in a taxi chatting with the driver. And he's chatting me back! It's great to be talking to someone my own age. He’s even kind of cute. It’s a welcome respite from being the live-in caregiver to my 84-year-old dad, but it doesn't last long. Did I mention Dad's in the back seat? And he couldn't have picked a worse time for -- how shall I put this? -- a gastric emergency. I have to take care of it, but that doesn't make me unattractive, does it? I mean, if you're dating on the road to Medicare, there's a whole different set of criteria for your perfect love match.

Excerpt from the full-length work and part of an evening of short works by four artists.

Father, Daughter and Holy Ghost
55 minutes
Aging parents. You get lots of advice on how to care for them. None of it works. Not when the parent is a stubborn, self-taught scientific genius with a workaround for everything. When science fails, faith will get him through, right? Two devoted daughters do their best to accommodate him. They muddle through, but at what cost?

"Code Gray in the Self-Check Lane"
Even though Dad's facing "the ultimate looming prospect," he refuses to follow doctor's orders. Where's his motivation? My own frustration boils over, and I have a complete meltdown in a very public place.

"Father, Daughter and Holy Toast"
Growing up, it was "our house". Now it's "Dad's house." But baby sister seems to think it's "her house." She's acting like a small squirt bottle of dish-washing soap is some kind of personal shrine, when everybody knows the real tabernacle of this kitchen is the toaster.
